Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare – Military Service Records

How to Use for Genealogy Research

Military service records (gunreki shōmeisho) of former Imperial Army and Navy personnel are now held and issued by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW). This is a key source for researching ancestors who served in the military.

Overview

The MHLW inherited personnel records (heisekibo/kaigun gunsekibo, etc.) from the former Imperial Army and Navy. These records can reveal enlistment and discharge dates, unit assignments, theaters of operation, and records of death, injury, or disappearance.

Information Available in Military Records

  • Enlistment and discharge dates
  • Unit or vessel assignment
  • Rank and decorations
  • Theaters of operation and deployment locations
  • Records of death or disappearance (where available)

How to Apply

Applications are open to bereaved family members (spouse, children, grandchildren, siblings, etc.). Submit an application form with koseki tōhon (proving relationship) by mail to the MHLW Welfare and Health Department Relief Work Center.
