How to Use for Genealogy Research
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) Pension Bureau (Onkyū-kyoku) administers pensions for former Imperial military personnel, pre-war civil servants, and their survivors. If an ancestor received a pension (onkyū), contacting the bureau may yield records. Additionally, pension recipients were listed in the Kanpō (Official Gazette), searchable via NDL Digital Collections.
Overview
The Onkyū-kyoku continues to manage the pension system established for pre-war military and civil service personnel. Pensions provide important clues about an ancestor’s military or civil service career and years of service.
Information Available
- Whether the individual received an onkyū pension (if applicable)
- Pension certificate number
- Start and end dates of pension payments
Notes
Inquiries are limited to direct lineal descendants (children, grandchildren, etc.). Records may not be available for all individuals.
