How to Use for Genealogy Research
Koseki are maintained by the municipal office of the registered address (honseki-chi). To obtain historical records such as jokoseki and kaiseigenkoseki, you must apply to the relevant municipal office.
Application Methods
- In-person: Visit the koseki section of the relevant municipal office
- By mail: Send application form, return envelope, postal money order for the fee, and copy of ID
- Via MynaPortal: Participating municipalities only
- Convenience store kiosk: Current koseki only (not removed or pre-revision registers)
Fees
- Koseki Tōhon: ¥450
- Jokoseki / Kaiseigenkoseki Tōhon: ¥750
Tracing Back Through Koseki
Start with the current koseki, note the “jūzen koseki” (previous register) information, and request that register from the prior municipality. Repeat to trace back to the Meiji era.
